Chapter 164: Prospective Migrants
Even if they eventually stop coming to visit, if Yato-san and the others’ lives improve, I’ll be happy.
I’m glad that we’ll suddenly have more manpower, and the Dragonfolk will be able to acquire new skills.
This really is a win–win proposal.
“Most likely, I think farming will become possible around Edelgius as well.”
“Truly!? Then I want you to accept some of the Dragonfolk!”
“Of course, that’s fine. However, since there are no houses yet, it’ll take a little longer before we can receive them.”
“There’s no need for you to prepare homes for us! We’ll just build our own houses and live in them as we please!”
“That would actually cause us trouble, so please allow us to properly prepare the houses. Do the Dragonfolk have carpenters?”
At my words, Yato-san and Ashros-san looked at each other and froze.
It seems neither of them knew whether they had carpenters, tilting their heads at one another in confusion.
“Hmm… I don’t know! But there are buildings on Mount Edelgius, so surely carpenters must exist!”
“I share the young lady’s view. I’m not sure if any of the prospective migrants are carpenters, but we can certainly lend you some, so please don’t hesitate to ask.”
“Understood. For now, could you check whether any of the prospective migrants have experience in construction? If not, we’ll provide wages, so it would help if you could recruit volunteers.”
Personally, I’d be grateful if there are carpenters among the migrants.
I’d feel a little guilty making non-migrants help, but carpenters would also gain knowledge and skills from this, so it wouldn’t be a loss.
I consider Rozzo-san and Sid-san to be first-rate, and I’m sure there’s a lot to learn from them.
Since we’ve got this chance, I’d like the Dragonfolk to develop in every way possible and absorb all the techniques they can.
“Got it! I’ll go ask everyone I brought along, so please wait here a moment!”
“Thank you. I’d appreciate it.”
Yato-san then began questioning the migrants she had brought this time.
Since it was just a simple survey, she returned right away.
“Sato! I asked, and among them there are carpenters, blacksmiths, and even cooks!”
“That many different professions? In that case, may I ask that the carpenters and blacksmiths stay here right away to begin working?”
“Of course! Everyone here came with the intent of migrating today!”
Yato quickly gathered them. Out of the 38 who came, 7 were carpenters or blacksmiths, and they went straight to work under Rozzo-san and Sid-san.
I felt bad, but the remaining 31 couldn’t live here yet since there were no houses, so they had to return to Mount Edelgius.
They had come expecting to migrate immediately, only to be sent back right away—it’s unfortunate, but this can’t be helped.
“Once the homes are ready, we’ll contact you, so please wait until then.”
“Mm! Thank you for everything, Sato!”
“No, thank you. I’m the one glad to have more helping hands.”
“I want to give you some kind of gift, Sato! You didn’t accept one the other day!”
“No gift is necessary. But if I may ask for something in return… even if farming becomes possible around Mount Edelgius, I’d like you and Ashros-san to continue visiting.”
I decided to voice the thought I’d had earlier.
Though I was embarrassed, I managed to say it. The two of them, however, only stared blankly at me, mouths slightly open, as if they couldn’t process my words.
“…It seems that didn’t come across, so let me repeat it. Even if you can farm around Mount Edelgius—”
“No, we understood perfectly. It’s just… right?”
“Exactly! It was so obvious it didn’t register! Of course we’ll keep visiting! In fact, before long, we fully intend to migrate here ourselves!”
“Indeed. The young lady and I were the very first prospective migrants. Actually, I could have migrated this very time…”
“No sneaking ahead! Ashros, you must cooperate so I can migrate too! We must migrate at the same time, or it won’t do!”
“And that’s how it is.”
I see.
So, if Ashros migrates, Yato wants her to make sure she can migrate alongside her.
Kurikara-san will probably oppose it fiercely, so it may be a matter for the distant future.
But still… knowing that they’ll continue visiting puts me at real ease.
“…Hm? Why do you look so happy, Sato!? Are you glad we aren’t migrating yet!?”
“It’s the opposite. I’m happy that you like this place enough to want to move here.”
“You’re a strange one, Sato! It’s only natural to want to live here!”
“Exactly. There’s no other place as enjoyable as this.”
Just hearing them say that is enough for me.
Until the day Yato and Ashros are able to migrate here, I need to make sure this remains a place they’ll continue to find fun and welcoming.
