Volume 3: Alverd Great of Rounds Arc

Chapter 1: Peaceful Hydrangea ⓪ — Their Bed

Perhaps because the commotion with the lab and the Minos Unit has finally settled down…
Ever since the barbecue party, these past few days have been unusually peaceful.

But if there’s been any major change recently, it’s the new bed.
I finally got off my lazy butt and graduated from my straw bed.

It all started with Haiyaan—the rabbit.
Lately, Mineha-san has been coming to make breakfast.
She hinted that, as a man, it’s embarrassing to sleep on a straw bed.

At first, I thought, what is this rabbit even saying?
And I even received a complaint that the bed was uncomfortable for her as well.

But why exactly is this rabbit sleeping in the same room as me?
Still, thinking about it, more girls have been in the room lately.
So sleeping on straw… it’s starting to feel embarrassing.

But I don’t know much about such things.
Haiyaan confidently claimed that women know the most about bedding.

Half in doubt, I decide to head to the base mansion of Torque-tam.
I’m led inside by Liv-san and meet Pakira-san.

“W-what, my bed? That’s a strange question. It’s made using slime.”
“Slime is the material?”
“It’s a bed made from slime blocks. Soft and nice.”

Hmm… like a waterbed from my previous life?
Oh yeah, there were slime cushions too.

“It must be expensive, right?”
“Yes… plus the service includes replacement every six months.”
“Oh, I see…”
“Depending on the season, the slime blocks used must also be replaced. Of course, it’s an extra charge.”
“R-really…?”

Sounds troublesome.
Nope, not for me.

“By the way, Lupinus’s bed is probably out of your budget too.”
“I can guess. Liv-san had a pipe bed, right?”
“That’s her homemade one… how do you know?”
“Oh, I just heard earlier.”
“I see… hmm.”

I managed to bluff my way out.
If I went into details about the room or how I got there, it’d be complicated.

Liv-san told me it’s a secret, which even Pakira-san can’t share.
Next, Bid-san happens to be around, so I ask him.

“Huh… m-my bed…?”

He looks flustered, slightly blushing, and wary.
When I explain, Bid-san gives a faint smile.

“Oh, I see. Then my bed probably won’t be a good reference.”
“Is it straw by any chance?”
“No… it’s… uh, a secret. It’s a sleeping bag.”
“W-what?”

Not even a bed—unexpected.

“Uh… well…”

Bid-san shyly leans closer and whispers in my ear.

“Also… this is a secret. I like being hugged tightly while sleeping…”
“…so that’s why it’s a sleeping bag.”

Her face is close. So close. Sweet-smelling.
Her voice, close to my ear, is sultry and cute.

Her embarrassment colors her rabbit ears bright red.
She looks up at me with moist eyes, almost accusingly.
S-sorry… I can’t handle this and quickly step back.

Hmm… I wonder if I was even supposed to hear that.

Well, since I’m here, I’ll ask Juicy-san too.
Half of this mansion is now the Tasan Domain’s annex.

Because of that, Juicy-san also lives here.
I’ve heard that this annex arrangement was a very favorable condition for Torquetum.
Originally, there were plenty of rooms, so it worked out perfectly.

“Wof-san?”
“Dova-san?”

I suddenly meet a beautiful woman in a white suit.
Dova Tasan—the older sister of Juicy-san and Rell-san.

A brown-skinned elf beauty with long silver hair.
Wearing a monocle over her left green eye.

Like Rell-san, the Tasan elves seem exceptionally more beautiful than other elves.
She resides here as the acting deputy of the Tasan Domain.

The first time I met her, she was in a maid outfit—long ago.
Ah, right. I’ll ask her too.

“Hello.”
“Ah… hello.”

She wipes food crumbs from her mouth and returns the greeting.

“Dova-san, I’d like to ask you something.”
“To Dova? What is it?”
“What kind of bed do you sleep in, Dova-san?”
“Eh…? A bed?”
“Yes. I was wondering what kind of bed you sleep on.”
“Oh… uh… you’re interested?”
“Yes.”
“….”
“Dova-san?”
“If that’s the case, please follow me.”
“Huh?”

Dova-san starts walking. I follow her.
Through a connecting corridor to a room on the first floor, around a corner.

A somewhat recessed room. Dova-san reaches for the door.

“Please, this is Dova’s sleeping quarters.”
“Y-yes.”

I opened the door. A soft floral scent floated in.

First, I saw a window draped with white lace curtains.

Next, a large canopy bed. Beside it was a vanity, aligned with a closet.

“Wow…”

“This is the bed Dova always sleeps in alone.”

She said, opening the canopy and sitting on the bed.

She beckoned me over with her hand. Nervously, I stepped into the sleeping area.

“It’s king-size, huh.”

It was wide enough to fit four or five of me lying side by side.
The bed occupied most of the room. Truly a sleeping quarters.

Dova lightly patted the space beside her, gesturing for me to sit. I obediently lowered myself.

“At my family home, we had a canopy bed too, but it was smaller than this.”
“Then why such a huge one?”
“Oh, this… I received it to commemorate the annex.”
“…You received it!?”

Incredible. As expected from a high-ranking noble family. How much could a bed like this cost?
Even a million Ouro might not be enough for such luxury.

Dova muttered softly:

“It’s kind of cruel, isn’t it? Being single with a bed this size… really cruel.”
“…”

“Well… Dova isn’t single by choice. I want to get married, I want a relationship, I want a boyfriend… I’m lonely. And, well… Wof-san, not just me, but all my sisters don’t even have boyfriends, let alone husbands. Whether one wants it or not is up to them. There was a time when noble daughters were used purely as political tools, but now it’s not like that. Slowly, public opinion is gaining strength, and noble authority is fading. It’s happening across the continent. Of course, there are still idiots clinging to old noble power, especially near the capital. You probably know, Wof-san, that a certain great noble who opposed the Tasan family was targeting ‘Torque-tam’ through a third-rate clan. Yes, the ‘Dragon Fang Row.’”

“…I got hassled by them too.”

“Ah, yes. That leader died at the time. He was the third son of a noble family, a delinquent who got into trouble. He died as an adventurer, so he wasn’t punished—essentially exiled. Then a kind person revealed the dark secrets of that noble family in detail with evidence, and the Steel Land Count’s family was dismantled. Their ironworks business became a private company.”

“Is that so?”

“Therefore, the Tasan family is grateful to Torquetum. And we’re grateful to you as well.”

Dova smiled at me. I blushed naturally.
Not much help for bed references, though. Wait… maybe Dova knows about the others.

“Um… I have another question.”
“Oh, yes. What is it?”
“What kind of beds do Shesh-san and Juicy-san sleep on?”
“Eh… why do you ask?”
“Actually, I want to place a new bed in my room, and I wanted to use it as a reference.”
“…So that’s why you asked about Dova’s bed too?”
“Yes.”
“…And the others as well?”
“Yes, I asked.”
“So… that’s why you came here?”
“Yes.”
“…Wof-san.”

Dova looked at me with a troubled expression.

“Asking girls about the beds they usually sleep on… that’s a bit… questionable.”
“…W-well, Haiyaan said girls know a lot about bedding.”
“Oh, right… but you shouldn’t take that naughty rabbit too seriously. Sure, some girls care a lot about their bedding, but asking them about their personal beds is not recommended. It’s better than asking about their underwear color, but still… it’s embarrassing.”

Having said that, Dova’s cheeks flushed and she looked down.

“I-I… I’m sorry.”

I had already suspected this a little. When I asked Bid-san, her reaction made me realize something was off.
But separate from the reference, I was genuinely curious.

“Ah… I’m so embarrassed… I’m really sorry.”
“It’s okay. I just think it’s… a bit obsessive.”
“N-no, it’s not like that!”

“By the way, Shesh uses a normal bed. Nothing interesting about it.”
“Really?”
“She’s much more practical than she looks. Juicy sleeps on the floor.”
“The floor?”
“Yes. She spreads out a large futon, puts long pillows and lots of cushions, and sleeps there.”
“She doesn’t use a bed?”
“Nope. She’s always done that.”

Ah, just like the dog at my family home in my previous life. Well, dogs don’t use beds.
I see. Sleeping on the floor is an option. But I’ll still sleep in a bed.

I apologized to Dova-san once more, thanked her, and left the mansion.
Alright. That rabbit… I’ll have to give it a smack.
